SASKATOON BRIEF:
Saskatoon (population 260,900, 2015), the largest city in Saskatchewan, has been able to maintain its small-town friendliness while continuing to grow materially. To its citizens, the quality of life ranks high on their priority list.
The city is situated in rolling parklands on the banks of the northward flowing South Saskatchewan River. It serves as a regional centre for the nothern prairies and for central and northern Saskatchewan.
Saskatoon is located 328 km north of the Canadian-American border, 225 km from the Alberta border and 346 km from the Manitoba border. It is 266 km northwest of Regina, the capital. A pivotal transportation and supply centre for Saskatchewan agricutural and mining industries, Saskatoon continues to find new ways of diversifying and expanding its economy.
Saskatoon is now embracing the rapidly expanding agricultural biotechnology industry. Agriculture is still king among the farmers and the Saskatchewan government. Saskatoon has also become a leader in high-tech industry, with an estimated 5,000 people employed by almost 200 agencies and companies.
Sports, culture and education are high priorities in Saskatoon, which prides itself on its quality of life. The cultural amenities are Saskatchewan Place, the Centennial Auditorium, a Symphony Orchestra, a vibrant live theatre scene, libraries, museums and art galleries.
The University of Saskatchewan is Canada's only university to confer degrees in all five life sciences and has achieved global recognition in the arts, medicine, engineering and agriculture.
