PRIVATE SCHOOLS & COLLEGES IN THE TERRITORIES

About 5.6% of Canadian students are in private schools. A minority of these are elite private schools, which are attended by only a small fraction of students, but do have a great deal of prestige and prominence. A far larger portion of private schools are religious based institutions. Private schools are also used to study outside the country. For example, Canadian College Italy has an Ontario curriculum, but the school is located in Italy.

The Territories have a combined population of about 100,000 spread over an enourmous area. Therefore private schools in the K1-12 area are almost non existent. The resources are not there to support the schools.

Yukon Montessori School, Whitehorse
Yukon Montessori School is a one-classroom, community and family oriented school located in Whitehorse, Yukon. It is a private school under the Yukon Education Act. It offers a Montessori program from Grade 1 to 6, based on the BC curriculum. It is operated by the Yukon Parents for Montessori Society (YPFMS), a non-profit society incorporated and registered under the Society Act of Yukon.

Aurora College, NWT
Aurora College serves a population of 41,000 dispersed across 1.3 million square kilometres in 33 communities in the Northwest Territories. A majority of Aurora College students are Aboriginal. Many of our students are from small, remote communities.

The Yukon Tourism Education Council
The Yukon Tourism Education Council facilitates and co-ordinates development initiatives and activities in order to support the Northern labour force. These activities include the administering of emerit- National Professional Certification and the delivery of settlement, integration, language and foreign qualification recognition services.
